It happens every year, although it’s a bit less stressful these days. The onset of the holidays brings travel for everyone, and that includes us. Thankfully though we have a pretty sweet situation set up, and we are extremely lucky.
No matter what you think of it, we live across the street from my in-laws. Trust me, they are awesome people and we don’t regret it for a second. So traveling to their place is literally a walk. My parents live about 15 minutes from here, straight down the main road that goes through town. Simple.
My brothers and their S.O.’s have a bit to travel however, one being 3 hours South from here and the other being about 8 hours North. But that brings me to what is possibly the most wonderful point of my family: it’s ok to not see each other.
Do we want to all be together during the holiday? Yes. But is it a do or die situation? No. If my brothers and their families can’t make it, it’s ok. We talk all the time anyway. Did it snow a shit-ton and we can’t make it out to my parents house? We’ll see you in a few days.
Our holiday shuffle isn’t the same as it is for many people because their is almost no pressure at all. Like I said, we DO want to all be together and will do what we can to make that happen. But if it doesn’t, so be it. We’ll see each other soon and it can be just as good a time no matter what day it is.
The love covers the distance, whether its across the street or hundreds of miles long.
